Understanding the Levels of Recovery Support: What They Are & How They Help
When someone begins their recovery journey, one of the most common questions we hear is:
“What type of recovery support is right for me or my loved one?”
Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all. Each person’s needs, history, and support system are different, which is why multiple levels of recovery support exist. These levels range from community-based peer support to structured clinical programs that provide 24/7 care.
At Rise Recovery, we believe informed families make empowered decisions. Below is a simple guide to understanding the main levels of care available across the recovery continuum, what each one offers, and how they differ.
1. Peer Support
Setting: Community-based
Focus: Emotional support, accountability, connection to resources
Peer support is often the entry point, or the steady anchor, on someone’s recovery path and it is the heart of our programs at Rise Recovery. These programs are led by people with lived experience who offer understanding, encouragement, and accountability.
While not clinical, peer support is incredibly powerful. It helps individuals build trust, regain confidence, and feel less alone. It also connects families and youth to further services when needed.
2. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Setting: Structured program with weekly sessions
Focus: Group therapy, counseling, life skills
IOP provides a higher level of support for individuals who need more structure than peer support alone but don’t require daily treatment. Participants attend scheduled therapy sessions (usually several times per week) while still living at home and maintaining school, work, or family responsibilities.
For teens, IOP can be a vital bridge between early intervention and more intensive clinical care. Rise Recovery offers a youth-focused IOP to support healthy coping, emotional regulation, and family healing.
3. Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
Setting: Day treatment, typically 6-8 hours per day
Focus: Medical monitoring, therapy, structured support
PHP is a step up from IOP, providing more hours of clinical care per day but still allowing participants to return home at night. This level is often recommended when someone needs comprehensive therapeutic support, regular monitoring, or help stabilizing symptoms before stepping down to outpatient care.
PHP combines therapeutic groups, individual counseling, and medical oversight, making it one of the most structured forms of outpatient recovery support.
4. Residential Treatment
Setting: Live-in facility
Focus: 24/7 intensive treatment and structured activities
Residential programs provide round-the-clock care in a supportive, controlled environment. Youth or adults stay onsite for several weeks or months, depending on their needs.
This level of care is designed for individuals who need significant structure, medical support, or time away from triggering environments to focus fully on their recovery.
Residential treatment often includes therapy, education, wellness activities, and family involvement.
5. Inpatient
Setting: Medical facility
Focus: Safe withdrawal management
Inpatient treatment is for individuals who need medical support to safely withdraw from substances. It is a medically supervised process to help stabilize someone physically before they move into another level of care such as residential, PHP, or IOP.
Inpatient care keeps individuals safe, supported, and prepared for the next phase of their recovery plan.
How These Levels Work Together
Think of the recovery continuum as a ladder; people can move up or down depending on their needs. Some may start with detox and residential care, then gradually transition to PHP, IOP, and eventually peer support. Others may begin with outpatient care or peer support and rely on those resources long-term.
Each step offers a different intensity, but all share the same goal:
to help individuals heal, rebuild, and thrive.
At Rise Recovery, we focus on community-based peer support and youth-centered programming, offering wraparound support that meets young people and families exactly where they are.
