Rise Recovery Applauds Local Students for National Recognition in C-SPAN’s Student Documentary Challenge
San Antonio, TX (March 28, 2025) — San Antonio’s substance use and recovery climate is making its way all the way to the White House. Rise Recovery – San Antonio joined the presidential conversation in a powerful documentary, “Confronting the Opioid Crisis: A President’s Prescription for Change,” which highlights the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic and potential solutions, including insights from Rise Recovery’s efforts in combating substance use disorders.
High school students Fernanda Le Duc, Tanvi Soni, and Abigail Currie from Imagine International Academy of North Texas in McKinney, Texas, earned 2nd prize in the High School West division of C-SPAN’s 2025 StudentCam documentary competition with their video submission. The StudentCam competition, which challenges young people to explore issues of national significance, recognized the students’ work for its compelling storytelling and critical examination of the opioid crisis. Through interviews with experts, personal stories, and policy analysis, their documentary sheds light on the urgent need for community-based recovery programs and national policy changes.
Rise Recovery, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by substance use, among other recovery community voices, was asked for their insights into substance use for youth. to the documentary by providing perspectives on recovery, prevention, and the importance of accessible support services. “In Bexar county, the average first use is 12.5-13 years of age. That means we need to have that conversation at that time, or someone else will have that conversation with them,” says Evita Morin, CEO of Rise Recovery.
The opioid crisis continues to be a pressing public health issue, affecting communities nationwide. By amplifying stories and advocating for comprehensive solutions, young filmmakers like Fernanda, Tanvi, and Abigail play a vital role in shaping the future of policy and public awareness.
