Mary Kate’s Story: From Childhood Struggles to Healing and Helping Others

When Mary Kate looks back at a childhood photo of herself, she sees more than a smiling face with a new haircut. Behind her young eyes was a deep loneliness and sorrow that would eventually lead her down a difficult path.

Her story begins with loss. After the sudden death of her father, her family was left reeling. At just nine years old, Mary Kate turned to alcohol to cope with the grief and emptiness she felt. What started as a way to escape quickly became a hidden battle, one that followed her into adolescence and beyond.

“I didn’t know who I could ask for help,” she reflects. “Alcohol became my best friend.”

The turning point came when her family sought help, and a doctor introduced them to Rise Recovery. Though hesitant and shy at first, Mary Kate slowly discovered what she had been missing: a community that welcomed her with open arms.

“I finally felt like not only was I loved, but I wasn’t alone,” she shares.

Through years of commitment, meetings, and support, Mary Kate not only found her footing in recovery, she found her calling. After four years in recovery, she became a sponsor, helping others take steps toward healing. That decision sparked a passion that led her to join Rise Recovery’s youth team, and later to a leadership role as Training and Partner Coordinator.

Today, Mary Kate has helped train over 200 peer specialists, has finished her college degree in psychology, and is thriving in a life filled with love, purpose, and family connection.

“Of course, I wish I could go back and change a thousand things,” she says. “But looking back on where I am today, I’m grateful. That’s why I do what I do, so that no one else feels unloved or alone.”

Mary Kate’s journey is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest days, there is hope. Through Rise Recovery, she discovered not only healing for herself, but also a way to extend compassion and guidance to others walking the same road.
