City Council Declares Overdose Crisis a Public Health Emergency

On November 21, 2024, the San Antonio City Council declared drug overdoses a public health crisis in response to rising overdose deaths across Bexar County. In 2023 alone, about nine people per week died from overdoses—many involving opioids or stimulants. (Read more on KSAT)

The resolution directs nearly $1 million in opioid settlement funds toward education, naloxone access, and harm-reduction efforts. It also calls for stronger collaboration with local nonprofits and recovery organizations.

“This declaration puts urgency and resources behind efforts that save lives,” said Evita Morin, Rise Recovery CEO.
